Road Trip: To Hell and Back

~ Road Trip: To Hell and Back ~

It was night, and the rain fell;
and falling, it was rain
but, having fallen
it was blood.

So tasted my heart.

Gone, the point of true beginning
where those first steps were never taken
and the night was just night and rain was rain
and truth didn’t exist to be marred, in time, by time.

I dread the events of the future
not in themselves, but in their results

for just as surely as there is a new road on the horizon
that horizon will lead to a mirage
and all that we see or seem
is but a dream within a dream.

No longer standing on a road I thought was there
I found myself at the end of the only road I’ve known.
With no shield from the crippling blast of reality
I knelt and laid bare each love I had carried in my heart
and each separate dying ember
wrought its ghost upon the floor.

I am empty, but still not spared
so as to remind myself of the taste of bloodied rain
reality hits me, too, drowning my mirage
and scorching my seared heart with a pain,
not Hell shall make me fear again.

It is a long walk back
with no mirages to distract me.
Reality sits on my shoulder
as I gently pick up my ghosts.
They are reminders of all I loved
and all I loved
I loved alone.

This was written for Blogophilia topic: Road Trip
(Prompt: Quote Edgar Allan Poe)

* I used the following Edgar Allan Poe quotes:

"It was night, and the rain fell; and falling, it was rain,
but, having fallen, it was blood.”

“I dread the events of the future,
not in themselves but in their results.”

“All that we see or seem is
but a dream within a dream”

“And each separate dying ember
wrought its ghost upon the floor”

“Scorching my seared heart with a pain,
not hell shall make me fear again”

“And all I loved, I loved alone.”

  1. OMG Dollface, this is so beautiful! Wow, you wrote this 12 years ago – where the hell does the time go? You have always written such beautiful, deep poetry and this is no exception. Soulful and meaningful, the imagery is so vivid and the emotions raw. xoxo Love you!
